Rheinsberg and the surrounding area

Experience nature and culture

Rheinsberg is a jewel set in an area with more than 170 lakes - making it ideal for lovers of nature. Discover the unspoilt forests, enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn wagon along shady, tree-lined roads, or paddle your own canoe across Grienerickslake. The landscapes of the Ruppin district offer delightful views of nature. A holiday in Rheinsberg and its fascinating surroundings offer a great opportunity for relaxation.

There is also the charm of the historical monuments which bear witness to a varied history. In the Middle Ages Rheinsberg was originally a border fort built to ward off the Mecklenburg tribes from the north. In 1734 the castle on the Grienericksee  was converted to a palace for the Crown Prince, who went on to become Frederick the Great. It was here that he spent an untrammelled youth - which he later recalled as the happiest days of his life. There were contacts even then with the Donnersmarck family: Wilhelm Ludwig Graf Henckel von Donnersmarck served as aide-de-camp in the Seven Year War to Prince Henry, brother of Frederick the Great.

A literary monument for the town was created by the writer Kurt Tucholsky. Like the young couple Claire and Wölfchen in his story "Rheinsberg. A picture book for lovers", visitors today still find themselves unable to resist its enchanting atmosphere. Many visitors from Berlin come to enjoy the summer festival or the excellent cultural events, for which this baroque town has meanwhile established a reputation far and wide.

The Rheinsberg Music Academy has dedicated itself in particular to providing support and encouragement for new talent. And here you can discover impressive new performers - the stars of tomorrow.
