The romantic Ruppin district

The landscape of the nature conservation area Ruppiner Seenrinne, with its lakes and terminal moraine ridges, bears striking witness to the effects of the last Ice Age. It begins with the Kalksee and Tornowsee lakes and stretches more than 40 kilometres south to the Upper Rhinluch. The steep waterside banks are split by gullies.

The romantic landscape from Neuruppin to the Binenwalde forest earned this area the name of Ruppin Swiss hills. It is characterised by a mixture of deciduous and pine trees. At its heart is a series of lakes which can be travelled by ship from Neuruppin to Boltenmühle, but the waterside paths are also a favourite route for hikers and cyclists. The writer Theodor Fontane walked through the Ruppin Area 130 years ago, and recorded his impressions in his book "Wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg".
